Recently, you can read and hear a lot about the HPV virus. It is now widely known that a very high percentage of cervical cancers are caused by the HPV virus. However, it should be known that this virus is also responsible for many other diseases. HPV has been detected in several types of malignant tumours.
The human papillomavirus is not a single pathogen, but a family of viruses that can only replicate in the nucleus of epithelial cells.

So far, more than 100 known types have been identified, which are numbered. All types are characterised by the fact that they attack epithelial organs and only cause infection in humans.

High-risk HPV types can cause cancers not only of the cervix, but also of the vagina, vulva, vulva, rectum and oral cavity.

Men are not safe either, because even in cervical cancers, HPV is found in a higher proportion of colorectal cancer patients’ tissues, and this type of tumour can occur in both sexes.

Human papillomavirus is also a major risk factor for head and neck cancers. In recent years, it has been found that around 50 percent of cancers of the larynx, pharynx and oral cavity are caused by viral infections.

Oral cancers caused by HPV infection are characterised by:

  • appear more often under the age of 50
  • more common in women
  • more common in non-smokers and non-drinkers

oral mucosal infection most often occurs through oral sex. Men can be infected with HPV in the same way, but it usually causes no visible symptoms and does not develop disease in the genitals.

The virus can also spread from the infected mother to the newborn baby’s oral mucosa during birth. Vaccination at the right age also protects against these. There is no specific medicine for viral illness.

Prevention is very important, and changing sexual habits can be effective.

6, 11, 16, 18 types exist. These vaccines are now available in Hungary. Although it is not funded by social security! However, many local governments, recognising the extreme preventive importance of vaccination, have made HPV vaccination free for 13-year-old girls.
