Homeopathic medicine is becoming more and more popular among natural medicine lovers every day, and is therefore becoming more and more prominent in dental treatments.

dentist is in a special position to use homeopathy because the dental treatments themselves (e.g. filling preparation, dentures) not or only partially (e.g. gum inflammation) can be triggered by the use of homeopathic medicines instead.

On the other hand, interventions and the body can be supported by homeopathic methods.

The necessary dental treatments MUST ALWAYS BE TAKEN and it is important to use homeopathic remedies IN ADDITION to medical treatment and NOT AFTER dental treatment.

How do homeopathic remedies work?

Homeopathy is a stimulant therapy. The very small amount of the active substance mobilises the agent’s defence system. Homeopathy is a personalised medicine, treating the symptoms and the patient as a whole. When used properly, homeopathy is a gentle treatment with no side effects and can be recommended for all ages.

Fear, anxiety about dental treatment:

Gelsemium: weakness, shivering, diarrhoea, the patient feels “out of strength”.
Argentum nitricum: unlike the former, the patient is very agitated, running up and down in fear, talking a lot about “having to run because of diarrhoea”.
Aconitum: if the fear is more in the form of a panic attack, the patient has a near-death fear with high anxiety.

Problems around wisdom teeth:

An important tip is to get tooth extraction, brushing after wisdom tooth removal is allowed and even mandatory (avoid rinsing that day), so that the tooth extraction place should not be contaminated. If this does happen, it can be very painful and can lead to mouth closure, so the dentist will clean the wound and the following medicines can help:

Arnica: is a useful analgesic and haemostatic for all oral surgery.

Belladonna: if the main symptom is throbbing pain, local swelling and redness, possibly fever. This agent is recommended first if local inflammation develops due to difficulty in erupting the wisdom tooth with the above symptoms.

Symphytum officinale: mainly promotes ossification of the lower  wisdom tooth following extraction.

Teething – for babies, toddlers

Chamomilla: is needed when an otherwise calm child starts to behave “unbearably” (angry, flapping, shouting), only calming down when carried in the mother’s arms. He sleeps badly, often with a flushed face on the side where his teeth come in. The child’s teeth break through slowly, with difficulty. It is often accompanied by greenish diarrhoea.

Rheum: teething with a strong, sour smelling diarrhoea (the whole child, e.g. his sweat, also smells sour).

Mercurius solubilis: very heavy salivation, bad breath, swollen tongue, teeth marks on the surface of the tongue, inflamed gums. Diarrhoea is a common accompanying symptom.

Aethusa: is characterised by vomiting (mainly from milk), cramping pains, restlessness, weakness.

Toothache, severe neuralgia pains:

  • Aconitum: very strong, intense, very violent, stormy onset, worsening with cold, or often triggered by cold wind, cold snap. Severe fright or shock may also cause or accompany the symptoms.
  • Arnica: deep filling after toothache.
  • Arsenicum album: burning, stabbing pain that improves with hot, warm drinks (e.g. sucked in the mouth), compresses, and rest. It develops at night, around midnight, or when it is cold, or gets worse.
  • Coffea: neuralgic toothache. He has a very low tolerance for pain (“unbearable”) and all other sensory stimuli. Sucking ice water or ice cubes in the mouth helps, but hot, warm food and drink with strong emotional impact can make the condition worse.
  • Hypericum: severe, shooting pain after tooth extraction , neuralgia of a tooth with a broken root or facial nerve, very deep filling, complaints during grinding. It is excellent in the treatment of injection-induced sensory nerve complaints (numbness, pain) and in the treatment of oral closure after oral surgery.
  • Causticum: Cold wind-induced or emotional facial nerve pain, possibly with paralytic symptoms, twitching, visual disturbances.

Rules for taking homeopathic medicines

Most medicines come in the form of balls or tablets. They should be sucked under the tongue, the active substance is absorbed from the mucous membranes of the mouth, so eat, drink and brush your teeth half an hour before and half an hour after taking the product, smoking is not recommended.

The use (even externally) of menthol, camphor and other aromatic substances and essential oils should be avoided as they may counteract the effects of the medicines. For babies, the medicines can be given by sip, dissolved in a little water, or by spoonfuls with a plastic spoon. One dose is 5 pellets or one tablet. The products should be kept away from electrically emitting devices (mobile phones, microphones, radios, etc.) and stored at room temperature in a dry place.
