Many of us are familiar with the unpleasant sensation of suddenly feeling pain in our teeth after eating an ice-cold ice cream or a bowl of hot soup.
Cervical sensitivity is a minor problem that can be remedied very quickly; however, it can lead to very serious problems.
How is it formed?
The main reason is sensitivity of exposed gums due to gingival recession. The sensitivity of this surface is completely individual. Sometimes a slightly free cervix can result in excruciating pain, while there are also cases where the denuded cervix barely responds to stimuli.
It can cause receding gums:
- Incorrect brushing technique: brushing very hard, “scrubbing” or using a hard-bristled toothbrush
- periodontal disease: gum recession due to the destruction of tissues that are in a state of permanent, chronic inflammation
- Age: may occur to a small extent with advancing age
- Enamel loss, tooth wear
- Clasp damage: removable denture clasps abrade the tooth surface.
Treatment: the most important part of the treatment is of course to eliminate the underlying causes. In other words, if there is a periodontal cause, the inflammation must be eliminated and only then can the cervical sensitivity be treated.
Several treatments can be used to eliminate sensitivity in exposed tooth necks.
There are special varnishes specially developed for this purpose, which can help to eliminate the problem in a few minutes. These varnishes reduce sensitivity through their components (sodium fluoride, calcium fluoride), forming a protective shield on the surface.
This process can be repeated several times if necessary.
If the exposed tooth surface is large, it is possible to “restore” the missing area by covering it with an aesthetic filling material.
From now on, we recommend the use of toothpastes with active ingredients (strontium chloride, potassium chloride…etc.) to help reduce sensitivity.
