The professional knowledge of the 21st century dentist, the availability of modern technical equipment and advanced imaging techniques, provide an opportunity to save the patient’s teeth in the vast majority of cases and avoid tooth extraction. The primary goal of our dentists is tooth preservation.
We try to save as many teeth as possible with root canal treatment, modern root canal filling and restoration using different materials and procedures.
However, there are times when this is no longer an option and tooth extraction is the only treatment.
There are several reasons why teeth may be removed:
- It may not be possible or no longer make sense to root-treat a diseased tooth. This is the case, for example, when the conditions for root canal treatment are not given: a curved root, a severely damaged root canal, a moving tooth or if a treatment instrument breaks into the treated canal.
- There are cases when prevention or we need to remove healthy teeth for orthodontic treatment . In this case, as part of the orthodontist’s carefully planned treatment plan, some teeth may need to be extracted to allow enough space for orthodontic treatment.
- The majority of tooth extractions are caused by improperly growing 3. removal of a chewing tooth, also known as a wisdom tooth. Due to the imbalance between the size of the jawbone and the size of the teeth, we are often forced to remove these teeth because they can cause serious discomfort, pain, mouth closure and displacement of other teeth. In most cases, these teeth fail to grow out, remain in the jawbone and are seen as a cusp. In this case, we remove them in a small operation to prevent or treat any nodal diseases that may develop (e.g. headaches, hair loss, eye inflammation, skin rashes, myocarditis).
Tooth extraction is a routine procedure, usually performed under local anaesthesia or possibly anaesthesia.
